You might have heard of Roman Polański, but who is Krzysztof Komeda?
Perhaps best-known to the wider public for his work in film scores (e.g. Polański’s Knife in the Water, Rosemary’s Baby, and Cul-de-sac, Wajda's 'Innocent Sorcerers'), Krzysztof Komeda is probably the most important artist in the history of Polish Jazz and is widely credited as being one of the founding fathers of European Jazz, His 1966 album Astigmatic, "marking a shift away from the dominant American approach with the emergence of a specific European aesthetic", is regarded as one of the most important European jazz albums. As a jazz musician, he exerted crucial influence on creating an original style, often described as the Polish School of Jazz.

Prawdopodobnie słyszeliście o Romanie Polańskim, ale kim jest Krzysztof Komeda?
Krzysztof Komeda, być może najbardziej znany szerszej publiczności z muzyki filmowej np. do filmów „Nóż w wodzie”, „Dziecko Rosemary” i „Cul-de-sac” Polańskiego czy „Niewinni czarodzieje” Wajdy, jest jednym z najważniejszych muzyków w historii polskiego, jak i europejskiego jazzu. Jego album „Astigmatic” z 1966r., określany jako „połączenie dominującego amerykańskiego podejścia z powstaniem specyficznej europejskiej estetyki”, jest uważany za jeden z przełomowych albumów jazzowych dwudziestego wieku. Jako muzyk przyczynił się także do stworzenia oryginalnego stylu, często opisywanego jako Polska Szkoła Jazzu.

Roman Polanski’s first feature is a brilliant psychological thriller that many critics still consider among his greatest work. The story is simple, yet the implications of its characters’ emotions and actions are profound. When a young hitchhiker joins a couple on a weekend yacht trip, psychological warfare breaks out as the two men compete for the woman’s attention. A storm forces the small crew below deck, tension mounts, tempers fray, things get rough but the games continue up to a violent climax. With stinging dialogue and a mercilessly probing camera, Polanski creates a disturbing study of male posturing and ego, but also of fear, humiliation, sexuality, and aggression.
This remarkable directorial debut won Polanski, young Polish film student, worldwide acclaim, a place on the cover of Time, and his first Oscar nomination.

Then Rosemary becomes pregnant and… the only thing that you can do is to "pray for Rosemary's baby”.
Polański’s bland ordinary settings and Komeda’s score of combined jazz, 60's pop and unique gothic orchestra lead to a truly disturbing effect in this low key thriller with a shocking twist and culminating in one of the greatest horror cues even written. Krzysztof Komeda's powerful and chilling theme, The Lullaby, is one of the most memorable of all horror film themes.
